L’Interpellation
Jean-Louis Forain was one of the youngest painters to take part in the exhibition of Impressionists: he achieved a great success both as an artist and, above all, as a caricaturist and illustrator, working for prestigious newspapers such as “Le Figaro” and “Le Courrier français”. Famous for his cartoons and images that perfectly portrayed the Parisian Belle Époque, Forain was one of the painters who, among those who took part in the exhibition of Impressionists, achieved the most recognition during his lifetime. He was friend with Édouard Manet and Edgar Degas, by whom he was deeply influenced. “L'interpellation” was part of the series of works with a more political-social character, being very similar - to make an example - to “Le Tribunal” (Tate Modern, London) or “La Maison Retrouvée” (Musée d'Orsay, Paris), in which the artist introduced and told daily life episodes, such as, in this case, the harsh scene of an arrest. Beyond this painting, the exhibition also features a drawing of a female figure that can be considered typical of Nouveau aesthetics and fashion.
