Van Gogh and Anton Mauve
Anton Mauve, who was married to a cousin of Van Gogh, was a very important Dutch painter of his age as well as among the most renowned exponents of the Hague School. During his life, he was paid homage with awards and major acquisitions of works for State museums, and he urged Van Gogh to persevere along the path of painting as he sensed immediately his remarkable abilities. Van Gogh was fascinated by Anton Mauve, whom he often referred to in his letters, and he considered him one of the most renowned people. Anton Mauve's work was very important to him to the extent that several Van Gogh’s works were inspired by his paintings, from which he took the background settings, themes or compositions’ structure.
