Jean-François Raffaëlli
La neige – soleil couchant
Paesaggio con neve
Jean-François Raffaëlli was the subject of a dispute within the Impressionist movement, as some did not want him in the group's exhibitions, deeming his painting style too far from the Impressionist movement. However, Degas, who was a great admirer of Raffaëlli, wanted him in at any cost. This conflict was behind Degas' departure from the Impressionist movement as well, as he later refused to exhibit with them. In truth, Raffaëlli's painting had little to do with the Impressionist style, being closer to realist painting, with episodes from everyday life. He was a great engraver and was also one of the founders, in 1900, of the Société de la gravure originale en couleurs. He produced over 180 etchings in his lifetime. He also produced elegant and delicate landscape views such as “La neige, soleil couchant” and “Landscape with Snow” shown here.
