Ludovic-Napoléon Lepic
Decoro Marino Porcelain plate called Faience, made by the Maison Léveillé on plates from the Cres and Monterau company. Léveillé stamp on the reverse Lepic signature at lower right The plate belongs to a marine-themed service depicting boats from various countries. Made by Lepic a few years before his death, the plate service was commissioned from him to be exhibited at the Universal Exhibition of 1889. The decoration, made from an etching printed as a base, is then taken up and coloured by hand, thus becoming, in effect, a unique piece. This extremely rare service retains the oriental taste of decoration so fashionable at the time. Recently exhibited in 2017 at the Berck sur Mer museum, they are an example of Lepic's passion for maritime subjects which, together with the animalier theme, were to be a distinctive feature of his work. The subjects of these plates were collected in a carnet, now jealously preserved in the museums of France.
