Édouard Manet - Bar aux Folies-Bergère
Bar aux Folies-Bergère
The delightful preparatory study for the large painting Un bar aux Folies Bergère is one of Manet's notes for the final painting. Done with quick touches of the brush, one can already glimpse the outline of what was to be the final idea, here visible through the etching made by Manet with Henri Guérard and published in the Gazette des Beaux-Arts. In the small studio, the maid is facing to the right and is talking to a patron. She is in the salon surrounded by people. In the final painting, however, the position behind the bar is preferred, with the almost cinematographic effect of the mirror reflecting the interior of the room, as can be seen in the aforementioned etching. In this small painting on display, the scene is lively, tumultuous as the Folies Bergère must have been. The rapid style of Manet's painting is exalted in this small but delightful masterpiece, where the colour scheme gives prominence to the soft light of the lamps in the background. It is probably one of the first preparatory studies Manet made for the large painting.
