Isidore Verheyden
Paysage de neige à la hulpe
The painting is an example of Isidore Verheiden's pure Impressionist style, derived from the lesson of Pissarro, to whom he formed a close friendship and from whom he drew inspiration, as is evident in this painting with its melancholically crepuscular tones and a choice of colour in which the strong analogies with Pissarro's painting are evident. Verheiden was one of the founders of the group of Belgian artists known as Les XX, created to promote the new Impressionist dictate in Belgium and the Nordic countries. The group in fact, in the wake of the Parisian Salons, organized an annual major exhibition to which Pissarro, Monet, Renoir, Gauguin and the masters of Impressionism and Post-Impressionism were invited on several occasions, including independent personalities such as James Ensor and Felicien Rops.
