Edited for the Fondation Van Gogh, the portfolio, made with lithographic printing in very few copies, reproduces some of Van Gogh's best-known artworks. These include some wonderful portraits in which Vincent non only represents the image and face of people, but also conveys a sense of introspection and detachment from the real world that haunted him throughout his short life.
2-3-4) Made almost entirely during his stay in Arles, these portraits depict, almost in full, the Roulin family, one of the few families that gave him a warm and friendly welcome. Van Gogh painted or drew more than 25 portraits of the Roulin postman family, and wrote to his brother Théo: “[...] I made portraits of a whole family, that of the postman whose head I had already drawn. The man, his wife, their child and their sixteen-year-old son, all very French characters, although the postman looks like a Russian.”
7) Maison de Van Gogh in Arles : Once he reached Arles, Van Gogh settled at number 2 Place Lamartine, in the so-called the “Yellow House” for the color of its walls. He dreamed of creating a community of artists in the house, a project that later failed. Signac wrote about Van Gogh's house: “[...] He took me to his home, in Lamartine Square, where I saw wonderful paintings, his masterpieces: Les Alyscamps, The Night Café, La Berceuse, L'ècluse, View of Saintes Maries de la Mer, The Starry Night, etc. Just imagine the magnificence of those whitewashed walls on which colors stood out with freshness.”
