Constant Troyon and Jean-Louis Ernest Meissonier
The two artists were a reference for Van Gogh: Troyon for his peasant themes and reinterpretation of a rural, pastoral world, which was among the peculiar research carried out by Van Gogh, who was inspired and affected by Troyon. Meissonier was ardently defended by Van Gogh against his detractors, who considered him just a “pompier” painter. Van Gogh himself extolled his consistency and great ability as a colorist, which made him one of the greatest. The same appreciation came years later by the exuberant personality of Salvador Dalí, who dedicated a laudatory pamphlet to Meissonier, enriched by drawings whose title, Hommage à Meissonier, was a clear appreciation.
